Everything old is new again.

Back in 2010, I taught a 1/2 quarter course at Kellogg (Northwestern University’s Business School) on “Special Topics in Real Estate Finance: Distressed Debt and Real Estate Private Equity”. It was a good class, and I enjoyed my time at Northwestern. It’s a great school with smart students. Also, as someone who didn’t get an MBA, it was nice to see what was behind the velvet curtain.

In 2011, when I approached the school about teaching it a second time, I was rebuffed (in a nice way). The problem wasn’t that they didn’t like me or what I had to say. It’s that by 2011 the crisis had passed and student interest in the subject had dissipated. I put my slides away, went back to my day-to-day, and I figured I wouldn’t need to talk about distressed investing for at least a few years.

Well, here we are. 🙂

This time, I’m relaunching it as my own product. My one day class is called Distressed Debt and Special Situations and I’ll build on what I did back then, will include everything I’ve learned in the last decade, and will layer in a ton of spreadsheets. It should be a lot of fun, and also very educational especially if you’re new to this. The price is $495 per person, and yes, you can take it remotely. As the class will be on May 29th, depending on the pandemic, if I can offer a live option in NYC, I will do so in addition to the remote option.

By the way, if you’re curious as to what I covered back in the day, the syllabus is below. It was a good class. Who knows? Maybe I’ll reach out to them again and see if they want me to take a second crack at it. Of course, that assumes that they’ll be open for class in the Fall….
